What is reverse osmosis?

Osmosis is a natural process known for more than 200 years on which reverse osmosis is based.

Reverse Osmosis is a water purification process which utilises a semi-permeable membrane to remove disolved minerals. If two solutions with different concentrations are separated by a semi permeable membrane, then the water from the weaker solutions flows towards the concentrated solution as if to equalise the concentrations.This is the natural Osmotic Phenomenon.

But if a sufficiently high pressure is applied to the concentrated solutions, the pure water from it, is forced through the permeable membrane, leaving behind the dissolved substances. This is called Reverse Osmosis(RO). Thus and RO Unit can produce clear, fresh, pleasant tasting water from brackish or contaminated water from wells, rivers or municipal supplies.
